Reading Blog 8: EBC Chapter 8

  • Summary: Chapter 8 focuses on how persuasion has influenced and altered the digital world. The volume and reach of persuasive messages have expanded, typically in the form of ads. These persuasive messages are delivered fast across multiple channels and to multiple people. Every organization and business has deployed persuasive techniques at some time or another; their delivery can be subtle, but at times also misleading. Persuasion is a complex and impersonal art; impersonal in the sense that there is a wider audience and not each message is going to be 100% tailored to its recipient. The chapter also discusses and provides examples for how to plan and write persuasive requests and claims and complaints. The key is to be logical and watch the tone of the piece, basically, try and tailor your writing to who your audience is. In addition to this Chapter 8 gives advice and examples on how to send persuasive emails. The key to persuading any boss or higher up is to pay attention to tone, present honest information, and have accurate evidence. The end of Chapter 8 addresses how to create effective sales messages online and on paper. Take into consideration the cost of a specific outlet and what more people are likely to use as an informational outlet. In any sales message, it is important to get the reader's attention, interests, desires, and intended action to reel them in at the end.

  • Comment: Chapter 8 was the first time that I have heard the phrase "messages flow upward". I am familiar with persuasive techniques, but it has never been taught to me this way. It is important to stay positive in order for a proposal to get approval, but also to use phrases such as "we suggest and we recommend" as humble and unifying words (226). The presentation can be good and you might think you are being persuasive, but if you are not pitching a logical, beneficial, or cost-effective idea then the presentation is all for nothing because your persuasive techniques were trying to sell something different.

  • Question: When it comes to delivering a persuasive message to a boss is there a preferred presentation style to get the best results?
